According to a previous report which we put up, there weren’t any traces of new iPod touches at all in iOS 5, making us believe that Apple might have different plans for its release cycles from this year onwards, or maybe kill the iPod touch for good for the iPhone 5. But things have turned out to be a little different.
Digging deep inside iOS 5 reveals a new model of the iPod touch, and suggests that the upgrade would be a very minor one. The discovery was made by iFans, and they say:
Up until now, only mentions of “iPod4,1,” the current iPod touch model, have been discovered in iOS 5 property lists. However, some snooping by iFans forum user shamrock has indeed yielded mention of an unreleased iPod touch model: “iPod4,2″ in the file /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.fairplayd.N81.plist
As MacRumors points out, the new iPod touch has been named iPod4,2 instead of iPod5,1 or iPod5,2, something which suggests that the upgraded iPod touch would carry no more than an upgraded processor (an A5 dual core most probably) and an added feature or two, we shouldn’t expect an all new design change on this one. The new iPod touch should be expected to release sometime this year, or maybe 2011, there’s no word on that yet. But since traces of the new iPod touch have been lurking in iOS 5’s file system then there’s a high chance that Apple would announce it this year rather than the next.
Fall is the time in which we expect a lot of things from Apple, to name a few: iOS 5, iPhone 5 and maybe if we’re lucky enough, the iPod touch too. iPhone 5 releasing in Fall makes perfect sense for a variety of reasons, first of all, Apple would want a new device to launch in the same time frame when they announce new software, in this case iOS 5, and there’s no second reason in case you’re still wondering. iOS 5 is expected to launch this Fall with tons of new features such as the whole new notifications system otherwise known as the Notifications Center, Twitter integration etc.
Apart from the iPod touch and iPhone 5, traces of new iPads have also been found in iOS 5, which hints towards the next iPad having a higher resolution display than the current one, Retina anyone?
